2023 Photo contest | Trussville AL Newborn Photographer
I recently had the honor of competing in the 2023 Shoot & Share Photo Contest - and I couldn't have been more humbled by the results. Of the 50 images I entered, nearly half of them made it to the top 30% or better. Amazingly, five of my images even placed in the top one hundred images of their respective categories! I was especially surprised when one of my images placed 26th out of 5004 images in its category! I am so proud, and of course I'll be sharing the winning images and the stories behind them here.
Top 30% Images:
Over the years, I have had the honor to watch this little family grow. This little’s mama has been there since the beginning of my business journey. She has experienced numerous losses over the years and finally, her rainbow baby arrived. For her 1-year cake smash photography session, we knew we had to go above and beyond. So, we traveled to the Rainbow Wall in Downtown Birmingham, Alabama to make magic! The session turned out to be a dream come true and we were overwhelmed with the results. Stephanie’s bundle of joy reached the top 30% of the babies category this year and I couldn't be more proud!
I couldn't believe my luck when this precious little chub walked through my studio doors for her first birthday and cake smash session. Her adorable chubby cheeks and sparkling eyes stole my heart from the moment I laid eyes on her. Speaking of those eyes, they were soul-gazing, full of curiosity and wonder. With her expressive gaze, I knew I had to capture this magical connection. So, I entered this captivating images of those peepers into the contest, and to my sheer delight, her image made it to the top 30% in the babies category. It was a testament to her irresistible charm and delightful little personality.
I must admit, I just adore Santa Clause, and this portrait really caught me by surprise. As a photographer who loves working with Santa every year for Santa Minis around the Holidays, I always look forward to capturing the magic and joy that Santa brings. But this particular image really stood out to me as something truly exquisite. The way Santa's warm smile and twinkling eyes reflect the pure magic that is Santa. It's one of those moments that screams Hallmark, and I can't help but imagine it gracing their holiday cards or mantelpieces. Hallmark, you know where to find me, because this image is the epitome of holiday enchantment.
TOP 20% Images:
When this client reached out to me, she was worried that she had missed the optimal window for Newborn portraits. However, as a dedicated photographer, I firmly believe that no baby should go un-photographed if I can help it. So, despite being 3 months old, we decided to swaddle this little nugget and create some beautiful images. To my delight, she was as happy as can be throughout the session, radiating pure joy. And her happiness paid off! One of her images made it to the top TWENTY PERCENT of entries in the baby category, a recognition that truly showcases her undeniable charm and adorable presence.
I think this one speaks for itself, truly. This photo captures the pure essence of a newborn in the most captivating way. The decision to enter it in the "newborn" vs “Macro” category was a a difficult one to make. Every tiny detail is beautifully showcased, from the delicate folds of the baby's skin to the wisps of hair on their head. But it's the baby's gaze that steals the show - so innocent and full of wonder, melting even the hardest of hearts. This image truly stands out, earning its well-deserved place among the top 20% of images in the newborn category.
Hollyn is my tiny bestie. From the moment she was born, I have had the honor of capturing her journey through life with my camera. Not only is her mama one of my very close friends, but Hollyn's contagious joy and adorable little personality have made her a natural in front of the lens. During one of our recent photo sessions, I couldn't help but melt when Hollyn grabbed her little feeties. It was such a precious moment that epitomized the innocence and sweetness of her early years. I knew instantly that this image had the potential to make a statement, and it did not disappoint. Who doesn't love an Easter Bunny baby? Shailyn, a delightful little soul, arrived at the studio for her Easter session radiating with excitement. Dressed in an enchanting bunny bonnet, she exuded an irresistible charm. We posed her in my chocolate Easter egg prop and with a mischievous glint in her eyes, she showcased her sassy side effortlessly. We were captivated by her confident presence, and it was no surprise when her extraordinary photograph earned her a well-deserved spot in the top 20% of the baby category in the prestigious Shoot & Share photo contest. Shailyn's enchanting personality and undeniable charm melts hearts and reminds us all why we adore Easter Bunny babies.
I love captivating angles, and this maternity session was full of them! From the moment I laid eyes on this gorgeous mama, I knew we were in for something special. She radiated beauty and confidence, effortlessly posing and showcasing her baby bump in the most stunning way. Every frame captured during our session seemed to be perfection, making it no surprise that her image made it to the top 20% of the Maternity category. Finalist Images:
There is something undeniably adorable about a tiny newborn tucked in snugly. The way they curl up, their delicate features, and their innocent expressions all combine to create an endearing sight that melts our hearts. However, there is one thing that surpasses even the cuteness of a newborn, and that is the joy of capturing such a precious moment in a photograph. When an image manages to become a finalist in a prestigious contest like the 2023 Shoot & Share Photo Contest, making it to the top 500 images in the newborn category, it signifies that not only is the subject adorable, but also that I captured that cuteness for the world to admire. It is a testament to the artistry and talent of the photographer, elevating the already adorable image to new heights.
Oh Jack & Charlie, you two are THE cutest! During your cake smash session, you brought along your bath toys, including a pair of adorable duckies. We couldn't resist the temptation to place those ducks on your heads, snap after snap. However, much to our amusement (and grandma's determined efforts), the ducks kept falling down. But then, after numerous attempts, grandma managed to perfectly balance both ducks on your heads. Just as I was about to capture the moment, Jack, you knocked your duckie off again, resulting in a hilarious twist. The expressions on your faces melted our hearts. This particular image became an instant favorite of mine, and to my delight, the world agreed. It made it to the finalist stage of the "That just Happened" category, placing in the top 500 of the contest.
Coopie the Pooh brought so much joy to the studio after his cleft surgery, and his precious little smile melted my heart. It was clear right away that Coop was deserving of the happiest baby award. He radiated pure happiness and contentment, lighting up the room with his infectious grin. Coop's journey from surgery to the studio was an inspiring one, and it was evident in the way he posed so effortlessly for the camera. His undeniable charm and beauty captured the hearts of everyone who saw his photograph, and it came as no surprise when he became one of the Finalist images for this year's contest. Coopie the Pooh is a shining example of resilience and the power of a genuine smile.

Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to photograph my first set of triplets for a client. The trio arrived at my studio when they were around two months old, and it was an extra special session as one of the siblings had spent quite some time in the NICU. Seeing them all healthy and thriving together was a heartwarming sight. During the shoot, I managed to capture a photograph that holds a special place in my heart. In that moment, all three precious little ones were peacefully asleep, snuggled up side by side. The image exudes pure adorableness, showcasing the unique bond between these three siblings. It was a reminder of the miracles that I have the privilege to witness and capture through my lens.
Let's talk about Finley for just a moment. This adorable little bundle of joy clearly stole the show in this year's contest, with more than one of his images placing in the competition. One particular capture melted hearts with the endearing moment of Finley's father cradling his delicate head, eliciting a precious facial expression that tugged at heartstrings. While deciding which version to enter, I found myself torn between the timeless elegance of black and white and the vibrant allure of color. Ultimately, I chose the black and white image, and I'm thrilled that it became a finalist in the Newborn category. It's moments like these that remind us of the power of photography to capture the purest emotions and create lasting memories.
I don't typically photograph birthday parties or events, as my specialty lies in newborn, maternity, and milestone photography. However, when my best friend hosted a Spenanite gathering with all six of her lively nieces, I couldn't resist capturing the delightful chaos that unfolded before my eyes. This particular photo holds a special place in my heart as it perfectly captures a spontaneous moment that was utterly unplanned. The nieces gathered around a cake, and to my surprise, Taylee decided to dive right in, embracing the joy and messiness of the occasion. I chose to enter this photograph into the "That just happened" category, as it exemplifies the unscripted and delightful nature of the moment.
Top 100 Images:
Like Finley, Hollyn collected a ton of votes! Making it to the top 100 images of the category, Hollyn licking the swing really cracks me up and I am so honored by everyone's response to her. It's incredible to see how one quirky and adorable moment can capture the hearts of so many people. Hollyn's playful curiosity shines through in that image, and it's a reminder of the joy and spontaneity that children bring to our lives. I'm grateful for every vote that brought her to the top, and it's a testament to the connection we can create through photography. Oh look, it's Finley again! In this captivating photo, a beautiful bond is displayed between a newborn, his mother, and his grandmother. As a newborn and maternity photographer, I always strive to capture natural connections and emotions, and this shot truly embodies that. And how could I enter Coopie's "after" surgery image without sharing his "before"!? This sweet sweet nugget was born with a cleft palate and lip, and I just adore him and his mama (and big brother!). The journey Coopie and his family have been on is truly inspirational. Despite the challenges he has faced, Cooper's spirit shines through, and his smile is nothing short of extraordinary. It's a reminder that the best smiles are the ones that are unique and genuine. Cooper's contagious smile is a testament to his resilience and the love and support of his family.
How could I not enter this precious shot of Everly & Layne, built-in best friends for life! Capturing their bond was truly a joy and this pose took a lot of effort to pull off. It required perfect coordination and patience from both the babies and myself. Although it may not be flawless, I am immensely proud of how well the two little ones did during their session. Their expressions of innocence and the connection between them is truly heartwarming. It's moments like these that remind me why I love being a photographer, freezing these fleeting memories into everlasting treasures.
